FG ready to welcome 270 more Nigerian returnees from South Africa on Wednesday

The Federal Government says it has concluded arrangements to receive 270 Nigerian citizens returning voluntarily from South Africa on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, as part of its ongoing evacuation programme.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that a chartered Air Peace aircraft will depart Lagos for Johannesburg on Tuesday, July 7, to airlift the returnees back to Nigeria.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the aircraft is scheduled to leave Lagos at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The ministry said the flight will depart Johannesburg at 12:00 midnight with the 270 returnees and is expected to arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at about 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, subject to operational conditions.

The statement read:

“In continuation of the ongoing evacuation of our nationals from South Africa, the Air Peace aircraft deployed for the process is expected to depart Lagos tomorrow, Tuesday 7 July, 2026, for Johannesburg, South Africa at 3:30 p.m.

“The aircraft will depart Johannesburg for Lagos with 270 returnees at 12:00 midnight, and the estimated time of arrival at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos is 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, 8 July, 2026, all things being equal.”

Part of ongoing evacuation programme

The ministry said the operation forms part of the Federal Government’s ongoing voluntary evacuation programme for Nigerians who wish to return from South Africa.

According to the statement, the latest flight will be the fourth evacuation mission carried out under the programme.

Reception plans underway

The ministry did not provide details on why the affected Nigerians opted to return home.
