During an interview on Arise News, Fayose maintained that state governors hold the primary responsibility for the safety of their constituents. He argued that while the Federal Government provides support, the governor’s role as the chief security officer of the state requires a more hands-on approach to intelligence gathering and the mobilization of security agencies.
“I stand by my words. Seyi Makinde was not proactive enough. The abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo is a problem caused by Governor Seyi Makinde,” Fayose stated. “It is the responsibility of the state government to mobilize the police. It is also its responsibility to manage the security network in the state.”
The former governor’s comments were largely prompted by the recent surge in kidnappings in and around the Ogbomoso area. Fayose claimed that insecurity in Nigeria has increasingly taken on a “commercial” nature, alleging that the involvement of some public officials and even family members in abductions for financial gain has exacerbated the crisis.
Drawing from his own experience in Ekiti State, Fayose highlighted his administration’s implementation of stringent anti-open-grazing policies and nocturnal movement restrictions as an example of the capacity governors have to enforce order. He urged state leaders to adopt more robust, localized security strategies to protect lives and livelihoods.
Fayose also used the platform to defend his stance on broader issues of political accountability, noting that all public figures—whether serving or former—should be prepared to face public scrutiny and criticism.
