The vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has called on opposition parties to unite ahead of the 2027 general election, warning that division among them would make it easier for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to retain power.
Amaechi made the appeal on Tuesday while receiving a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, during a condolence visit following the death of his mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Amaechi.
The former Rivers State governor said collaboration among opposition parties remains the most realistic path to defeating the APC and unseating the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
He urged opposition leaders to continue seeking common ground and prioritise national interest over personal political ambitions.
According to Amaechi, a fragmented opposition would weaken efforts to challenge the ruling party at the polls and increase the APC’s chances of remaining in power.
During the meeting, Amaechi also reflected on the role his late mother played in raising him and his siblings, describing her dedication and sacrifices as instrumental to his upbringing.
Speaking on behalf of the visiting delegation, Turaki expressed sympathy to Amaechi and his family, describing the loss of a mother as a profound experience.
“Nothing prepares anybody for the loss of a parent, especially a mother. We can only imagine the deep loss and grief that you and your family are going through,” Turaki said.
The PDP faction also recalled Amaechi’s political career within the party, noting that he served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and later as Governor of Rivers State under the PDP platform before leaving the party.
