The meeting, held at the China World Hotel in Beijing, brought together members of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (NIDO China) and other Nigerians residing in China. President Tinubu, addressing the gathering, emphasized the significant strides made during his discussions with Chinese leaders, including President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. The talks, which took place on the sidelines of the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China- Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), focused on bolstering cooperation between the two countries in areas such as infrastructure, trade, finance, energy, the green economy, and mining.

Reflecting on his visit, President Tinubu described it as ” very good and successful, ” a sentiment that was met with applause from the audience. He highlighted China’ s infrastructure as a model that Nigeria could emulate, stressing the importance of modern, well- maintained facilities in fostering national development.

” We want our children to be in good schools, not in tattered huts and dilapidated buildings, ” Tinubu stated. ” We must make our teaching innovative and allow businesses of all kinds and sizes to flourish. One economic action leads to another, and it is in your hands to build our nation. Mine is to provide the leadership, and I am committed to doing just that. ”

Drawing on his observations of Chinese society, the President highlighted the importance of discipline and commitment in nation- building. He urged Nigerians to emulate China’ s disciplined approach to governance and societal organization, emphasizing that without such qualities, Nigeria cannot build a nation that commands global respect.
” I cannot tell you more, except from the embassy, that China is a very disciplined society, and we have to be disciplined too, ” Tinubu said. ” Without discipline and commitment, we cannot build a nation that is respected everywhere in the world. We must exploit our diversity and be ready to do everything required of us within the laws of the communities that we live in and reflect a good image of our country. ”
In addition to discussing discipline and national service, President Tinubu touched on the economic potential of the Nigerian diaspora in China. He assured the audience that Nigeria’ s Bank of Industry is prepared to collaborate with Nigerians abroad to harness opportunities at home, particularly in the context of the country’ s ongoing economic reforms.
” Nigeria is going through reforms, and we are taking very bold and unprecedented decisions, ” the President noted. He alluded to recent discussions around fuel prices in Nigeria, acknowledging the challenges posed by such reforms but stressing their necessity for long- term development.

” Can we help it? Can we develop good roads like you have here? You see electricity being constant in quantity and quality. You see water supply, constant and running, and you see their good schools. And we say we want to hand over a banner without stain to our children? ” Tinubu questioned, emphasizing the critical importance of making difficult decisions now to secure a prosperous future for Nigeria.
The President also praised the talents of Nigerians living in China, particularly their proficiency in Mandarin, and encouraged them to continue contributing to the nation’ s development from abroad.
