In response, the police clarified on Thursday that the individuals captured in the footage were members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) and not bandits.

Reacting during Arise Television’s Morning Show, Rufai expressed skepticism over the explanation and argued that many Nigerians expected clearer accountability and public communication.

“Do they think Nigerians are daft or we don’t have brains?” he asked during the programme.

Rufai questioned what he described as unusual optics in the footage, particularly the interaction between security personnel and the armed riders.

“I don’t know when the police started giving salutes to vigilantes, and they carry some sophisticated weapons. So, the vigilante will be passing on motorcycles, police will see them and be waving, ‘go ahead, go ahead,’” he said.

He further linked public distrust and recurring controversies around security issues to broader concerns about governance and political leadership.

“You see, we live in a mess. And this mess has been largely caused by our political class because of their own selfishness,” he added.

The video and subsequent reactions have continued to generate debate online, with calls from some Nigerians for greater transparency in security operations and clearer communication from authorities whenever such incidents occur….See More
