Speaking via a statement by the the agency’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC chair said, “ When I look at some case files and see the humongous amount of money stolen, I wonder how we are still surviving. If you see some case files, you will weep. The way they move unspent budget allocation to private accounts in commercial banks before midnight at the end of a budget circle, you will wonder what kind of spirit drives us as Nigerians.”
He also said public corruption ranks as the biggest cause of corruption in Nigeria.

Olukoyede pointed out that if public corruption was taken out of the polity, the country would fare better than many countries of the world.
He said, “ A situation where somebody would hold a public office or position of trust for years and you call him to account and he says No, he would not account, is not acceptable.”
He stressed that transparency and accountability should be embedded in both the public and private sectors for optimal development of the country.

While noting that corruption poses a huge challenge to the country, Olukoyede expressed optimism that the prevention mechanisms of his leadership would ensure that the commission stays ahead of the devices of the corrupt to ensure that Nigerians have good governance experiences.

The South-East Governors Forum (SEGF) has reached a resolution to meet President Bola Tinubu over the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).The governors also announced the appointment of former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim and ex-minister of transportation Rotimi Amaechi as the chairman and secretary for the burial committee of the former minister of science and technology, the late Ogbonnaya Onu.

Hope Uzodimma, the chairman of the forum and governor of Imo state, disclosed this at the end of a meeting with his colleagues in the region at the Enugu state government house on Tuesday, July 2.

Uzodimma also disclosed their resolve to meet the President and discussed major issues affecting the South East region in the country.According to the Imo state governor, the SEGF received a delegation of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, the Commonwealth of Nations secretary general, and HRH Igwe Alfred Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha.

His statement reads in part:“The Forum deliberated on the review of the report of the South-East Security Summit held in September 2023 and agreed to implement the aspect pertaining to the security and economic degradation of the region.“They affirmed their desire to put actionable plans on the key issues agreed.”

All the five governors in the South-East were present at the meeting. They are Uzodimma, Charles Soludo of Anambra, Alex Otti of Abia, Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi, and Peter Mbah of Enugu.

The bill seeking to create Adada State, an additional state in the South-East geo-political zone, on Tuesday passed its first reading in the House of Senate. The bill, which has been cited as the “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Bill, 2024 (SB. 482)” was sponsored by the lawmaker representing the Enugu North Senatorial District, Senator Okey Ezea

The bill, according to the lawmaker, seeks to amend Section 3(1) and the First Schedule, Part 1 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to allow for the creation of another state in the South-East region.

The move was aimed at bringing the number of states in the region to six as it is in other geo-political zones.

DAILY POST reports that the agitation for the creation of Adada State had started since 1983 when the late Senator Isaiah Ani, who represented the Nsukka senatorial zone in the Second Republic presented a bill.

In a recent statement, Human rights activist and public commentator, Senator Shehu Sani, has shared his thoughts on the current state of the Nigerian Senate under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, during a recent interview with The Sun.

Senator Sani, who served in the 8th National Assembly, compared the present Senate to its predecessors.
He praised the former Senate President Bukola Saraki, stating that Saraki was the best Senate President we have ever had.

He underlined Saraki’s role in holding the executive accountable and maintaining the independence and integrity of the National Assembly.

Senator Sani compared Saraki’s tenure with the current Senate led by Akpabio.

He criticized the Senate under Ahmad Lawan, calling it a “rubber stamp Senate” for its perceived failure to check the executive branch during President Buhari’s administration.

Senator Sani expressed concerns about the consequences of the previous Senate’s actions.
Reflecting on the ongoing issues in Nigeria, Senator Sani questioned the role of the National Assembly from 2019 to 2023.
“Saraki was the best Senate

President we have ever had. For the fact that he held the executive to account and that for the first time, a National Assembly was viewed with integrity and we maintained the independence and sanctity of the National Assembly, that is, the Parliament. Godswill Akpabio’s Senate is far, far below the standard of Saraki’s Senate, but it is far ahead of Lawan’s Senate.”
“Lawan’s Senate was rubber stamp Senate because part of the problems which we have now, they plunged Nigeria into; the fact that the Senate at that time failed to perform its duty. It was approving everything of Buhari, endorsing everything of Buhari and then, they led us to where we are today. Most of the revelations that are coming now about how this country was destroyed, the question you will ask is, where was the National Assembly from 2019 till 2023?” he said.
