A 23-year-old Nigerian medical graduate, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died after sustaining severe injuries in a Russian airstrike on Kharkiv, Ukraine, days before her graduation ceremony.
Adaobi, a student of Kharkiv National Medical University, was injured on June 29, 2026, when aerial bombs struck the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv. She later died despite receiving treatment in Ukraine and Germany.
University pays tribute
Kharkiv National Medical University confirmed her death in a statement, describing her as a bright, hardworking and compassionate individual.
“Nnani Adaobi Marian was a bright, sincere and kind-hearted person. She easily found common ground with people and was distinguished by her thirst for knowledge, hard work and sincere desire to help others,” the university said.
The institution stated that she suffered severe injuries during the attack and was initially treated in Kharkiv before being transferred to Germany for further medical care.
According to the university, despite efforts by medical teams, she could not be saved.
Attack occurred days before graduation
Reports said Adaobi and her friend, Fatima Huseynova, were on their way to a graduation photoshoot when the airstrike occurred.
Fatima reportedly died at the scene, while Adaobi was taken to hospital with critical injuries.
The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office said doctors fought to save Adaobi’s life until the very end and extended condolences to her family and loved ones.
Academic journey
Adaobi had been studying at Kharkiv National Medical University since 2020.
According to the university, she also completed internships at the University of Cambridge and Biruni University in Türkiye.
