Tennis legend Serena Williams is set to make another comeback to competitive tennis at the age of 44, with a doubles appearance alongside her sister, Venus Williams, at this month’s Cincinnati Open.
Tournament organisers announced that the iconic sisters have been awarded a wild-card entry into the doubles draw for the tournament, which begins next week in Mason, Ohio.
The event will mark the first time Serena and Venus have played a doubles match together since the 2022 US Open, ending a nearly four-year wait for fans to see the celebrated duo back on the same court.
The sisters were also scheduled to compete together at Wimbledon earlier this year after receiving a wild-card entry, but Serena was forced to withdraw due to a knee injury.
Together, the Williams sisters have built one of the most successful doubles partnerships in tennis history, winning 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals.
Meanwhile, 46-year-old Venus Williams is also expected to compete in the mixed doubles event at the US Open later this month alongside Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik.
Serena’s most recent comeback earlier this year was short-lived. She opened with a first-round doubles victory at Queen’s Club alongside Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko, but the pair withdrew after Mboko sustained an MCL knee injury.
She later suffered a doubles defeat in Berlin while partnering Karolina Muchova before ending her return with a first-round singles loss to Maya Joint at Wimbledon.
Following her withdrawal from Wimbledon doubles, Serena expressed disappointment in a message shared on Instagram.
“I’m heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles. Coming back to compete again has been a gift, and the opportunity to play alongside Venus once more meant the world to me. I did everything I could, but unfortunately my knee just isn’t ready to compete.”
She also thanked tournament organisers and fans for their support, adding:
“All I can say is stay tuned to a city near you.”
The Cincinnati Open will now provide another opportunity for the legendary sisters to reunite on court as they continue to inspire tennis fans around the world…..See more
