Political commentator Imran Wakili has alleged that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has repeatedly taken actions he considers unconstitutional without facing consequences, raising concerns about accountability and the strength of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
According to reports, Wakili made the remarks in a post shared on X, where he questioned what he described as the growing disregard for constitutional limits.
He cited what he alleged were several constitutional breaches, including the suspension of a sitting governor, the continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and the reported freezing of the Osun State Government’s accounts.
Wakili claimed that El-Rufai had remained in detention for 170 days over what he described as a bailable offence, alleging that no public explanation had been provided for 50 of those days.
Commenting on the reported freezing of Osun State’s accounts, he wrote:
“Bola Tinubu is now freezing the account of an entire state government, and there is nothing anybody can do about it, regardless of what the Constitution says.”
Wakili further warned that continued inaction over what he described as unconstitutional decisions could weaken Nigeria’s democratic institutions ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
He also criticised the National Assembly, alleging that it had failed to provide effective checks and balances on the executive arm of government.
According to him, if current trends continue, lawmakers could even approve a hypothetical third-term bid, despite constitutional provisions on presidential tenure.
The political commentator equally accused opposition lawmakers of failing to effectively hold the government accountable, arguing that weak institutional oversight poses a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
