Senate President Godswill Akpabio has come under fire from Nigerian social media users following his comments that Nigerians will not recognise the country again by the time President Bola Tinubu completes his remaining seven years in office.

Akpabio who made the comments on Tuesday during the flag-off of the Kugbo Bus Terminal in Abuja

, said Nigerians shouid not worry about the hardship, poverty, hunger and other challenges facing them, but only pray for the success of the Tinubu’s administration as their sacrifices would pay off in the next seven years.

“I have no doubt that by the time the president is through with his tenure in the country, seven years from today, many people will not recognise FCT, they will not recognise Nigeria again.

“So, all I can say is, let us continue to pray for him and be hopeful that the challenges you see today, tomorrow, you will see them no more.

“He did it in Lagos and today, Lagos is one of the best; one of the largest economies in Africa when we are talking about cities,” the former Akwa Ibom governor said.

However, the comments have drawn a lot of attacks on Akpabio with netizens coming hard on him.

The Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, yesterday, threw his weight behind the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, condemning Senator Ireti Kingibe over her eruption against the minister.

Kingibe, the Senator representing the FCT in the 10th National Assembly, has been attacking the minister, criticising almost every step taken by Wike and his administration.

Two days ago, the Senator, who has been complaining that Wike has never consulted her on all his policies, appeared on a live television programme, and openly attacked the minister.

Speaking during the official flag-off ceremony of the construction of Kugbo Bus Terminal, initiated by Wike’s administration, said that Senator Kingibe has no genuine ground to attack Wike.

Akpabio noted that Kingibe being a member of the Senate is bound by every decision collectively taken by the legislators of the upper Chambers.

He urged Wike to ignore the distractions coming from the Senator and other quarters and concentrate on the job of transforming the nation’s capital.

He said: “A lot of people will say things. I saw a legislator on television saying something about you, and mentioning the fact that she was not carried along. “Well she is a member of the senate. When a decision is taken she is bound by the decision.

Please, ignore every distraction and be rest assured that no matter what you do, not everyone will praise you, no matter what you do to others will still try to find fault.”

Earlier in his remarks, Wike said the decision to cite the bus terminal in Kugbo, was informed by the need to cushion the hardship of residents in that axis of the city

Kanu was re-arrested in Kenya in 2021 by the Federal Government and brought to the country for trial on terrorism charges.
Senators from the South-East have pleaded with President Bola Tinubu to order the release of the detained leader of the indigenous people of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

Led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the lawmakers claimed that unless Kanu is released, the social and economic activities in the South-East region will continue to be stagnant.

The senators held a closed-door meeting with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, where their letter to President Tinubu on the release of Kanu, was delivered for onward passage to the the presidency.

Addressing journalists immediately after the meeting, Abaribe who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, lamented that the economy and social life in the region had suffered enough due to the continued incarceration of the Biafra nation agitator.

Abaribe noted with grave concern, that the peaceful demand of the detained IPOB leader had been hijacked by hoodlums and hardened criminals, leading to wanton killings of innocent people, including security operatives.

The former Abia state Deputy Governor told journalists, that he had already met with Kanu at the headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja on Monday, and that Kanu had agreed to abide by any conditional release.

Senator Abaribe expressed optimism that once Kanu is released, the tension and acrimonies engulfing the region since 2021 when he was clamped into DSS custody, would become an event of the past.

The senators therefore pleaded with the AGF to convey their message to President Tinubu and for the AGF, to use his position to terminate all charges brought against the IPOB leader by the federal government.

Besides the Senators, Abaribe said that virtually all political leaders, religious leaders and stakeholders, have unanimously agreed that Kanu be released for peace to return to the region.

Kanu was re-arrested in Kenya in 2021 by the Federal Government and brought to the country for trial on terrorism charges.

Although he pleaded not guilty to the charges, Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja, declined to admit him to bail on the ground that he jumped the earlier one in which Senator Abaribe was his surety.

Kanu has since been in the custody of the DSS on the order of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

He also said public corruption ranks as the biggest cause of corruption in Nigeria.

Olukoyede pointed out that if public corruption was taken out of the polity, the country would fare better than many countries of the world.
He said, “ A situation where somebody would hold a public office or position of trust for years and you call him to account and he says No, he would not account, is not acceptable.”
He stressed that transparency and accountability should be embedded in both the public and private sectors for optimal development of the country.

While noting that corruption poses a huge challenge to the country, Olukoyede expressed optimism that the prevention mechanisms of his leadership would ensure that the commission stays ahead of the devices of the corrupt to ensure that Nigerians have good governance experiences.

The South-East Governors Forum (SEGF) has reached a resolution to meet President Bola Tinubu over the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).The governors also announced the appointment of former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim and ex-minister of transportation Rotimi Amaechi as the chairman and secretary for the burial committee of the former minister of science and technology, the late Ogbonnaya Onu.

Hope Uzodimma, the chairman of the forum and governor of Imo state, disclosed this at the end of a meeting with his colleagues in the region at the Enugu state government house on Tuesday, July 2.

Uzodimma also disclosed their resolve to meet the President and discussed major issues affecting the South East region in the country.According to the Imo state governor, the SEGF received a delegation of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, the Commonwealth of Nations secretary general, and HRH Igwe Alfred Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha.

His statement reads in part:“The Forum deliberated on the review of the report of the South-East Security Summit held in September 2023 and agreed to implement the aspect pertaining to the security and economic degradation of the region.“They affirmed their desire to put actionable plans on the key issues agreed.”

All the five governors in the South-East were present at the meeting. They are Uzodimma, Charles Soludo of Anambra, Alex Otti of Abia, Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi, and Peter Mbah of Enugu.
