Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has explained why he turned down the opportunity to wear Galatasaray’s iconic number 9 shirt, opting instead to continue with his familiar number 45 jersey ahead of the new season.
Osimhen, who completed a permanent move to the Turkish champions after a successful loan spell, has become one of the club’s most influential players through a string of outstanding performances.
Following the departure of Mauro Icardi, many fans expected the Nigerian forward to inherit the famous number 9 shirt.
However, Osimhen has chosen to retain the number 45 jersey, which he believes has brought him good fortune since arriving at the club.
Speaking to Sabah, the 26-year-old explained his decision.
“I believe that you will sell more shirts, but I believe you will understand my perspective. The number 45 has been lucky for me at Galatasaray.
“I wish to continue with the same number.”
His decision has been welcomed by many supporters, who have already associated the number 45 with the striker’s success in the famous yellow and red colours.
Osimhen recently opened his preseason goal account by finding the net in Galatasaray’s 3-3 draw against Rennes in Istanbul.
The Nigerian international will now be looking to build on that performance as Galatasaray prepare to defend their domestic title and compete in Europe during the 2026/27 season…..See more
