US Pilot Claims He Saw Unusual Drone Formation Before Ejecting From Downed Fighter Jet Over Iran

A US fighter pilot whose aircraft was reportedly shot down over Iran in April has described seeing what appeared to be an unusual formation of drones moments before ejecting from the aircraft, according to a report citing sources familiar with post-mission intelligence briefings.

According to CNN, the pilot later shared details of the incident with US intelligence officials during a debriefing following his rescue.

The pilot allegedly described observing multiple aerial objects moving in coordinated patterns, with smaller drones positioned beneath larger ones, creating what he interpreted as a “jellyfish-like” formation.

The account has reportedly generated discussion within sections of the US intelligence community as analysts assess whether the observation reflects emerging drone coordination capabilities or conditions associated with combat environments.

According to the report, the pilot also described the airspace as heavily populated with unmanned systems before his aircraft was struck.

US forces subsequently launched search-and-rescue operations after the fighter aircraft went down on April 3.

Reports cited by CNN identified the aircraft as an F-15E Strike Eagle, a multirole combat aircraft designed for both air-to-air and ground attack missions.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed the exact cause of the aircraft’s loss.

However, the pilot’s observations have reportedly become part of ongoing assessments into whether coordinated drone deployment may have played any role in the incident.

The report further stated that another crew member onboard — identified as a weapons systems officer — was rescued later after reportedly evading capture.

Separately, reports indicated that another US aircraft involved in rescue efforts was also lost, although its pilot successfully ejected outside Iranian airspace.

No official public conclusion has yet been announced regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident or the pilot’s account.
