Ohanaeze Ndigbo has publicly rejected comments attributed to former Anambra State governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi calling for President Bola Tinubu to resign, distancing the Igbo socio-cultural organisation from the position.
In a statement released on Monday by factional Deputy President-General Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and Professor Chibuikeya Achoakawa, the group said it considered the comparison between political developments in the United Kingdom and Nigeria to be inappropriate and lacking equivalent political context.
According to the organisation, while Obi retains the constitutional right to express personal opinions, those remarks should not be interpreted as representing the collective position, political direction, or interests of the Southeast region.
Ohanaeze stated that it “unequivocally” dissociates the Igbo nation from any call for President Tinubu’s resignation and urged political leaders to exercise restraint in public discourse to avoid increasing political tension.
The group also used the statement to highlight areas where it believes progress has been recorded, pointing to federal infrastructure projects and economic indicators. It referenced ongoing works linked to the Southeast and acknowledged the role of Minister of Works David Umahi in supervising federal road initiatives.
Among projects mentioned were the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, the Badagry–Sokoto Highway Corridor and broader regional connectivity plans, which the organisation said could support economic expansion and national integration if sustained.
Ohanaeze further noted reported improvements in external reserves and security conditions across parts of the Southeast, arguing that continued collaboration between the federal government and regional stakeholders could help maintain stability and encourage investment.
The organisation concluded by calling on political actors across party lines to prioritise dialogue, responsible leadership and national cohesion over partisan confrontation.
