France captain Kylian Mbappe has taken the lead in the race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot after scoring in his country’s 2-0 quarter-final victory over Morocco on Thursday.
Mbappe found the net in the second half to register his eighth goal of the tournament, moving ahead of Argentina captain Lionel Messi on the Golden Boot standings due to his superior assist record.
Mbappe Scores as France Reach Semi-finals
The 27-year-old had an opportunity to open the scoring in the first half but saw his penalty saved by Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bono.
He eventually broke the deadlock in the 60th minute with a curling finish before Ousmane Dembele added France’s second goal six minutes later to seal the victory and book Les Bleus’ place in the semi-finals.

Following the quarter-final result, the leading scorers are:
- Kylian Mbappe (France) – 8 goals, 2 assists
- Lionel Messi (Argentina) – 8 goals
