The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of paying increasing attention to its governorship hopeful, Oladipupo Adebutu, ahead of the 2027 election.
The position was outlined in a statement issued on Sunday by the Ogun PDP Youth Leader, Lukman Ejalonibu, who argued that political conversations around Adebutu reflect shifting dynamics in the state’s political landscape.
The remarks followed comments credited to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun’s Special Assistant on Youth Development, Olamide Lawal, during a television appearance in which he reportedly dismissed Adebutu as a major electoral threat to the ruling party.
According to the source report, Lawal argued that Adebutu lacks the political strength and performance profile required to challenge the APC and also referenced zoning considerations as a factor likely to shape the 2027 governorship contest.
Responding to those remarks, Ejalonibu said the ruling party’s continued engagement with Adebutu contradicted its position that he poses little political challenge.
“It is both amusing and contradictory that the same APC which claims Adebutu is ‘not a threat’ continues to devote so much time and energy to discussing him,” he said.
The PDP youth leader also defended Adebutu’s political record, citing what he described as constituency interventions, educational support efforts, youth-focused programmes and community development initiatives during his time in public office.
Ejalonibu maintained that the opposition party intends to focus its campaign message on governance, economic conditions, infrastructure and broader public concerns rather than political calculations.
He further criticised what he described as reliance on zoning debates instead of policy discussions and argued that elections should be determined by public confidence, competence and competing ideas.
The comments represent the PDP’s position and form part of early political exchanges as parties begin positioning ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
