Fresh security concerns have emerged in Nigeria’s North-West after allegations surfaced that notorious bandit leader Bello Turji may be expanding his operational strength through access to more advanced weapons and support networks. watch video
The claims were made by Bashir Altine Guyawa Isa, leader of Rundunar Adalchi in Sokoto State, during an interview with BBC Hausa Service, where he raised concerns about what he described as a growing security threat across affected communities.
According to Isa, intelligence reportedly gathered by local security volunteers suggests that Turji and his associates have established a training facility around the Sokoto–Zamfara border area. He alleged that the site is being used to recruit, train and equip new fighters.
Isa further claimed that members of Boko Haram are providing training and logistical support to those at the camp, a development he said could increase the sophistication and reach of armed groups operating in the region.
The vigilante leader alleged that the facility has operated for some time and warned that its continued existence could undermine ongoing security operations aimed at restoring peace in North-West communities.
He also claimed that intelligence available to local groups points to possible plans by the armed network to widen the scope of attacks beyond rural settlements and target strategic locations and prominent individuals.
However, the allegations have not been independently verified, and no official confirmation was cited regarding the existence of the camp, the alleged weapons acquisition, or collaboration with extremist groups.
Security agencies have repeatedly intensified operations against bandit networks across Sokoto, Zamfara and neighbouring states as authorities continue efforts to reduce kidnappings, attacks and displacement linked to insecurity in the region.
Isa called for stronger intelligence-led interventions and urged authorities to investigate the claims and act quickly if credible evidence supports the reported developments.
