Adebutu: Nigeria Cannot Achieve Development Without Security

No meaningful development can take place without security - PDP's Adebutu

Security Must Come First for Nigeria’s Development

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State for the 2027 election, Oladipupo Adebutu, has argued that meaningful development cannot happen in Nigeria unless insecurity is addressed first.

Speaking during a media parley in Abeokuta on Monday, Adebutu said protecting lives and property remains the foundation for economic growth, investment and social progress.

He told journalists that security occupies the top position in his political agenda, insisting that prosperity cannot be achieved in an environment where citizens and businesses feel unsafe.

According to him, “We cannot build a prosperous society without ensuring the safety of lives and property,” while describing insecurity as one of the country’s most pressing challenges.

Adebutu also praised the role of the media in strengthening accountability and democracy but acknowledged the difficult operating environment facing journalists in Nigeria and globally. He called for greater commitment across sectors as the country navigates economic and governance pressures.

With political activities expected to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, the PDP candidate urged journalists to maintain fairness and professionalism, warning that political communication may become increasingly heated and divisive.

Other party figures at the event echoed similar positions. PDP deputy governorship candidate Lateefah Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo called on journalists to remain objective and resist intimidation, arguing that balanced reporting supports political stability and public trust.

Also speaking, Ogun Central Senatorial candidate Iyabo Obasanjo said political leadership should deliver visible benefits to citizens, noting that economic activity alone is not enough if people do not experience measurable improvements in daily life.

The event concluded with renewed calls from party leaders for stronger democratic participation and greater public accountability as preparations for the next election cycle continue.
