According to local sources, the attackers descended upon the town after emerging from the Kainji Lake National Park. The payment had been coerced under direct threats of assault, with residents believing the financial tribute would secure their safety and allow them to remain in their homes undisturbed.
“The bandits imposed a N10 million levy on communities in the district. The money was paid because they threatened to attack us if we failed to comply,” said a resident who requested anonymity. “But despite receiving the money, they still attacked the district headquarters and burnt down the primary school.”
The violence has since spread to neighboring areas. In the Shiroro Local Government Area, fresh raids were reported in the communities of Dnakau, Lanta, and Unguwan Kawo. During these incidents, one resident, identified as Emma from Bagna, was reportedly shot, while another individual, Moses Joseph of Unguwan Kawo, was abducted by the assailants.
Efforts to obtain an official statement regarding the security situation were unsuccessful. The Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, did not respond to multiple phone calls or text messages requesting comment on the incidents.
