The incident, which occurred on Thursday, has claimed several lives, though the total number of casualties remains unconfirmed as rescue operations persist. Crews worked throughout the day until 6:00 p.m. on Thursday without reaching the victims buried in the debris. Activities were temporarily suspended overnight and resumed early Friday morning.
Addressing the crisis in a statement, Governor Fubara expressed deep regret over the loss of life. He emphasized that in an era of strict building codes, such disasters should not occur if safety protocols are observed.
“We are deeply touched by the loss of human lives, as such misfortune should not have occurred in modern times when professional standards and safety measures are expected to guide construction activities,” the governor stated.
