Police spokesperson DSP Maureen Chinaka confirmed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for the area has been tasked with tracking down the suspect and recovering the missing children.
According to reports provided to the authorities, the abduction involved a calculated diversionary tactic. A group of pupils, caught in the rain, had boarded the tricycle for a ride. During the trip, the rider stopped the vehicle, claiming he had run out of fuel. He then handed money and a jerrycan to the older children, instructing them to walk to a nearby station to purchase fuel.
The older pupils complied, leaving the two youngest children behind in the tricycle. Upon returning with the fuel, they discovered that both the rider and the younger children were gone.
“He brought out one thousand Naira and a Jerry Can and gave the elder ones the money to get fuel for him. Having gotten it and come back, they could neither find the tricyclist and the two younger ones they left in the vehicle,” DSP Chinaka explained.
The Barrah Chiedozie, chairman of the Umuosu Development Association, has expressed deep concern on behalf of the local community, confirming that the victims remain missing as of this weekend.
The police have issued an urgent appeal to the public for any information that could lead to the identification of the tricycle operator or the discovery of the children’s whereabouts.
