No fewer than 15 people were killed, while 17 others sustained injuries, after a lone trailer crashed along the Ogbomoso-Oloru Highway at the Oko-Olowo axis of Ilorin South Local Government Area, Kwara State, in the early hours of Monday.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the crash occurred at about 2:32 a.m. near the Muslim Cemetery in Oko-Olowo and involved a DAF XF trailer with registration number GWL 274 XC, driven by Nasiru Muhammed.
FRSC gives casualty figures
According to the Kwara Sector Command of the FRSC, 48 male occupants were involved in the crash.
The agency said:
- 15 people died at the scene.
- 17 sustained injuries, including fractures, dislocations and bruises.
- 16 escaped unhurt.
The injured victims were taken to Arewa Medical Centre and Baki Hospital for treatment.
The bodies of those who died were released to their families and the Sarkin Hausawa of Oko-Olowo for burial.
Driver fatigue blamed
The FRSC attributed the crash to driver fatigue, adding that emergency responders arrived at the scene within five minutes of receiving the distress call.
According to a statement by Taofeek Sanusi, rescue operations were carried out by personnel of the FRSC Oloru Unit Command and the Oko-Olowo outpost.
The statement added that search efforts were continuing amid concerns that more victims could be trapped beneath the trailer’s load.
FRSC urges safer driving
The Kwara State Sector Commander, Kabiru Babatunde Kazeem, visited the crash scene to coordinate rescue and recovery efforts.
He said the command would intensify public awareness campaigns through town hall meetings and stakeholder engagements to improve road safety.
