A thunderstorm has claimed the lives of six people in Ganye Local Government Area of Adamawa State, after lightning struck a group of farmers working in the field during heavy rainfall.
Three other victims survived the incident after regaining consciousness, according to the Adamawa State Police Command.
Lightning Strikes Farmers on Sunday
Confirming the incident in a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said the tragedy occurred at about 4:00 p.m. on Sunday in Dadiri-Tirigali village.
According to him, the victims were working on a farm when the lightning struck during a heavy downpour.
The command said it received an emergency report from the Ganye Divisional Police Headquarters, prompting officers to immediately respond to the scene.
Police Describe Rescue Effort
Nguroje said officers found the victims lying unconscious when they arrived at the farm.
“The report said that lightning had struck nine persons who were working on a farm in the village.
“On receipt of the report, personnel from the division were promptly deployed to the scene, who on reaching there found the victims lying unconscious on the ground.
“Three of the victims later regained consciousness, while the remaining six were confirmed dead by medical personnel,” the statement read.
Community Mourns Victims
The incident has left residents of Dadiri-Tirigali village in mourning as families grapple with the sudden loss of their loved ones.
Lightning strikes, though relatively rare, can become deadly during intense thunderstorms, particularly for people working in open fields without access to adequate shelter.
The tragedy highlights the dangers of remaining in open spaces during severe weather conditions, especially in farming communities where outdoor work often continues despite approaching storms.
