Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has responded to criticism over his land administration policies in Abuja, saying he is often labelled a “land grabber” simply because he is a politician implementing development decisions.
Wike made the remarks on Tuesday during the commissioning of the Judges’ Quarters for the Court of Appeal and the flag-off of residential projects for judges of the Industrial Court and the Code of Conduct Tribunal in Abuja, as part of activities marking President Bola Tinubu’s third-year anniversary in office.
The FCT Minister explained that several parcels of land used for the judiciary housing projects were originally allocated years ago but remained undeveloped for over a decade.
According to him, some of the affected plots were initially allocated to Julius Berger about 15 years ago but were later revoked by the Federal Capital Territory Administration under his leadership to make way for public infrastructure.
Wike said the decision was driven by the need to prioritise development and improve facilities for judicial officers working within the capital.
Speaking at the event, Wike defended his actions, insisting that political leadership often attracts criticism regardless of intentions.
He argued that once a person enters politics, public perception becomes inevitable, adding that he remained focused on delivering results rather than responding to criticism.
Wike further stated that the reclaimed lands were being used to construct Judges’ Quarters and other judiciary facilities to improve working and living conditions for judicial officers in Abuja.
The FCT Minister also explained that surrounding developments were reviewed and, in some cases, acquired to ensure the safety of judges residing in the area.
He noted that the government considered security risks in planning the residential layout, including concerns about potential criminal threats in isolated areas.
According to him, compensation would be paid to affected landowners as part of the revocation process.
Wike added that the goal was to secure the entire environment for judicial officers while ensuring orderly urban development.
Wike maintained that his administration will continue to reclaim and repurpose undeveloped or misused lands in the FCT where necessary, insisting that such decisions are aimed at public benefit despite criticism from opponents.
