The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has opened an investigation after security operatives intercepted gold valued at more than ₦4.4 billion at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, triggering questions over the ownership and intended destination of the consignment.
According to the anti-graft agency, approximately 22.2 kilograms of unprocessed gold was recovered during an operation at the airport, leading to the arrest of three suspects.
Investigators are examining the source of the gold, how it was transported and whether the movement complied with applicable regulations governing mineral resources and export procedures.
While public discussion around the case has intensified online, including references to political figures, no official statement from the EFCC has linked any elected official or public office holder to ownership of the intercepted gold.
