A Nigerian-American health professional, Kelvin Onyiaeze, has revealed plans to institute a N1 billion defamation lawsuit against social commentator Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan.
Onyiaeze made this known during a media briefing in Abuja on Friday, following a viral video in which VeryDarkMan accused him of being involved in land grabbing.
Responding to the allegation, Onyiaeze dismissed the claims as false and damaging, describing them as a deliberate effort to harm his reputation. He maintained that the accusations were entirely untrue.
“The allegations contained in the viral video are a total falsehood and a coordinated attempt at character assassination. Mr. Kelvin Onyiaeze is a law-abiding United States citizen and a distinguished healthcare specialist,” he said.
He further argued that using social media platforms to target individuals in such a manner poses a serious threat, particularly to professionals in the diaspora community.
Onyiaeze also alleged that the actions of VeryDarkMan contravene provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015, citing issues related to cyberstalking, bullying, and the spread of harmful content intended to damage reputations.
He called on security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, to take appropriate action against the commentator.
According to him, his legal team, led by Abubarka Orumah, has been directed to proceed with legal action over the alleged libel.
He added that the case is intended to ensure accountability and serve as a warning against the misuse of digital platforms to target individuals for personal or financial motives.
