Troops under Operation Enduring Peace have intercepted a significant quantity of ammunition and materials suspected to be components for improvised explosive devices (IEDs) along the Kaduna–Jos road.
The interception took place on Thursday at about 11:45 a.m. near Boys Science Secondary School on the Manchok–Jos axis in Kaduna State.
According to the military, the operation involved a stop-and-search exercise carried out by troops, with support from a special forces tactical team, on a commercial vehicle.
The vehicle, described as a navy-blue Opel wagon bearing registration number NSR 154 TA Kano, was transporting seven passengers at the time.
A search conducted on the vehicle reportedly uncovered hidden ammunition, including 569 rounds of 12.7mm anti-aircraft bullets and several high-velocity warheads. Troops also recovered 189 empty shells of 7.62mm special ammunition.
In addition, security operatives found disused Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) phones believed to be components used for remote detonation of IEDs.
The driver, identified as Khalifa Bawa, denied ownership of the items. He claimed the consignment was handed to him as a “waybill” by an unidentified individual and said he had no information about the sender or the intended recipient.
The army confirmed that all occupants of the vehicle have been taken into custody, while the suspects, the vehicle, and the recovered materials are undergoing further investigation.
Military authorities added that efforts are ongoing to trace the source of the consignment and uncover those responsible for the shipment.
