The airline disclosed that the Boeing 737-700 aircraft, registered as 5N-MJF and operating Flight W3 740, was preparing to land at Port Harcourt International Airport in Omagwa when the flight crew detected a loud noise coming from one of the engines.

In line with standard aviation safety procedures, the pilots decided to divert the aircraft to the nearest suitable airport. The plane was safely rerouted to Benin Airport, where it landed without further incident.

Arik Air confirmed that all 80 passengers and crew members onboard disembarked safely, and no injuries were reported. The airline also assured that arrangements were made to transport affected passengers to Port Harcourt to complete their journey.

Reacting to the incident, Arik Air’s Public Relations and Communications Manager, Adebanji Ola, apologised to passengers for the disruption and reiterated the airline’s commitment to passenger safety and operational standards.

Emergency diversions due to technical issues are standard precautionary measures in aviation to ensure the safety of passengers and crew whenever mechanical concerns arise during flights.

The decision was reached during Tuesday’s plenary session after lawmakers reviewed recommendations aimed at addressing concerns raised by citizens, civil society organisations, and political stakeholders.

According to reports, the Senate amended Clause 60 to mandate presiding officers at polling units to electronically upload election results to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Result Viewing (IREV) portal. However, the amendment also provides that in cases where electronic transmission fails due to network or technical issues, the manual result sheet, Form EC8A, will serve as the official document for result collation.

The development comes after weeks of protests at the National Assembly, where demonstrators and advocacy groups insisted that electronic transmission of results is essential for improving electoral transparency and reducing manipulation during elections.

Supporters of the amendment believe the dual transmission system will ensure credibility while providing a backup in areas with poor network coverage. Analysts say the move could help strengthen public trust in Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of future elections.
