Chelsea and Manchester City recorded an unwanted milestone in the UEFA Champions League after both teams suffered heavy defeats in their Round of 16 first-leg matches on Wednesday night.

Chelsea were beaten 5–2 by Paris Saint-Germain in Paris, while Manchester City lost 3–0 to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu in Spain.

The results have now created a historic record for English clubs in Europe’s top competition. According to football statistics platform OptaJoe, this is the first time two Premier League teams have lost by three goals or more on the same day in European Cup or UEFA Champions League history.

Chelsea struggled to contain PSG’s attack during the match in France, conceding five goals in a difficult outing away from home. Manchester City also faced a tough challenge against Real Madrid, who secured a comfortable three-goal victory in front of their home supporters.

Both English clubs now face an uphill task ahead of the return legs of the Round of 16 ties.

Chelsea will host Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg in England next week as they attempt to overturn the deficit. Manchester City will also return home to face Real Madrid in their own second-leg fixture.

The results mean both teams must produce strong performances in the return matches if they are to keep their Champions League campaigns alive.

Five English Premier League clubs could be knocked out of the UEFA Champions League after disappointing results in the first legs of the Round of 16 fixtures this week.

Six Premier League teams remain in the competition, but none managed to record a victory in the opening matches. Only Arsenal and Newcastle United secured draws, while Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool all suffered defeats.

Chelsea endured a difficult night in France, losing 5–2 to Paris Saint-Germain. Manchester City also faced a heavy defeat after Real Madrid beat them 3–0 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

On Tuesday, Liverpool were narrowly beaten 1–0 by Galatasaray. Tottenham Hotspur also struggled in Spain as Atletico Madrid defeated them 5–2 at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Newcastle United came close to securing a win at home against Barcelona. Harvey Barnes put the hosts ahead, but Lamine Yamal equalised with a late penalty, leaving the match level ahead of the return leg at the Camp Nou.

Arsenal also had to rely on a late penalty to avoid defeat. Kai Havertz converted from the spot to secure a 1–1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen in Germany.

Among the English sides, Arsenal appear to have the most favourable position heading into the second leg, which will take place at the Emirates Stadium.

The return fixtures will determine which teams advance to the quarter-finals of Europe’s top club competition.
