JUST IN: 25 pupils discharged from hospital as Alaafin, Alli donate cash, car

Twenty-five of the 39 pupils rescued after spending weeks in captivity in Oyo State have been discharged from the Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, after doctors certified them medically fit to return to their families.

The pupils were admitted for comprehensive medical examinations and psychological evaluation after being handed over to Governor Seyi Makinde by the Nigerian military earlier this week. Hospital sources said the remaining pupils and teachers still receiving treatment could also be discharged once doctors confirm they are fit.

Medical evaluations also uncovered a congenital heart defect in one of the rescued pupils. According to hospital officials, the condition was detected during routine examinations, and the child’s parents were previously unaware of the health issue.

“We have commenced the necessary medical procedures and will formally notify the Oyo State Government to facilitate the next phase of treatment,” a hospital source said, adding that the child is receiving appropriate care.

Meanwhile, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, commended the Armed Forces and other security agencies for securing the victims’ release. During a visit to the rescued pupils, the monarch praised the military’s intelligence-led operations against terrorism and donated cash to support the victims as they recover.

The royal father also acknowledged the efforts of traditional rulers who advocated for the safe return of the abducted pupils, describing the rescue operation as a significant achievement in the fight against insecurity.

In a separate gesture, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Oyo State, Sharafadeen Alli, presented a brand-new Toyota Camry to the Principal of Community High School, Esiele, Mrs. Rachael Alamu, whose vehicle was destroyed during the abduction.

Alli praised the principal for her courage throughout the ordeal, noting that she remained steadfast despite being forced by the kidnappers to appear in videos recorded during captivity. He said the donation was intended to support her recovery and encourage her as she returns to her professional duties.

Also on Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, visited the victims at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital. He expressed sympathy to the pupils, teachers and their families while assuring them that the Federal Government remains committed to strengthening security and protecting lives across the country.

The rescued pupils were among those abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State before security forces successfully secured their release after several weeks in captivity.
