Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised the recent protest by opposition figures over the leadership dispute within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), questioning the motives behind the demonstration.
Speaking in an interview with Symfoni TV, Sowore argued that the protest appeared to be driven more by personal political interests than by a genuine concern for Nigerians.
He suggested that the demonstration might not have occurred if the individuals involved were not directly affected by the issue. According to him, the use of protective gear, including bulletproof vests by some protesters, pointed to concerns about personal safety rather than a broader public cause.
Despite his reservations, Sowore said he shared the protest flyer on his Facebook page and encouraged participation, even mobilising some of his supporters to attend.
However, he noted that he did not personally take part in the protest, stating that he was not formally invited.
Sowore maintained that his political positions are guided by principle rather than electoral ambition, adding that he has consistently spoken out against injustice, including during periods when some of the current opposition figures were in power.
He further criticised what he described as a pattern of selective activism among certain political actors, alleging that many only become vocal when their personal or political interests are at stake.
The activist also expressed doubts about their long-term commitment, suggesting that some may withdraw from public engagement after the 2027 elections and only return when it becomes politically expedient.
