Former senator Shehu Sani has ignited fresh debate over perceived political bias and regional sentiments in Nigeria following his reaction to reports about the engagement of a United States consultancy firm to pressure the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a post shared on social media, Sani argued that public reaction would likely have taken a different turn if the same action had been linked to former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. He suggested that such a move would have quickly been interpreted through a regional lens, with critics branding it a “Biafra agenda.”
Sani said the situation reflects what he sees as double standards in Nigeria’s political space, where similar actions are judged differently depending on the personalities or regions involved.
He also drew attention to past controversies, referencing criticism faced by Pastor Dachomo, who had reportedly taken concerns about insecurity in Northern Nigeria to the United States Congress. According to Sani, the move attracted backlash from some quarters, with accusations that Nigeria’s internal issues were being externalised.
By comparing both situations, the former lawmaker questioned why reactions vary based on who is involved, suggesting that political interests often shape public narratives.
His remarks have since sparked discussions online, with many Nigerians weighing in on the influence of ethnicity, political loyalty, and media framing in shaping public opinion.
