The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast cloudy weather, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across many parts of Nigeria from Wednesday to Friday, while warning that strong winds may accompany some of the storms.
In its weather outlook released in Abuja on Wednesday, the agency said states in the North, North-Central and Southern regions would experience varying levels of rainfall and thunderstorms over the three-day period.
Wednesday Forecast
In the Northern region, the day will begin with patches of clouds, while thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected in parts of:
- Sokoto
- Kebbi
- Katsina
- Kano
- Zamfara
- Gombe
- Bauchi
- Taraba
- Adamawa
Later in the day, the thunderstorms are expected to spread to Kaduna and other parts of the North-East.
For the North-Central, cloudy skies are expected in the morning, with thunderstorms and light rainfall likely in parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau and Nasarawa states.
By afternoon and evening, moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast for Benue, Kogi, FCT, Kwara, Niger, Nasarawa and Plateau.
In the South, cloudy conditions are expected in the morning, with light rainfall in parts of the South-South. Moderate rainfall is later expected across parts of Ondo, Ekiti, Oyo, as well as the South-East and South-South.
Thursday Forecast
NiMet said the Northern region will continue to experience cloudy conditions, with morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in parts of:
- Zamfara
- Kebbi
- Katsina
- Kano
- Kaduna
- Taraba
- Adamawa
- Bauchi
- Gombe
The agency added that thunderstorms with moderate rainfall would become more widespread across the region later in the day.
The North-Central is also expected to experience widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall throughout Thursday.
In the South, moderate rainfall is forecast for parts of Ondo and the South-South during the day, with additional rainfall expected across the South-East and South-South later in the day.
Friday Forecast
For Friday morning, thunderstorms with rainfall are expected in parts of:
- Borno
- Yobe
- Adamawa
- Taraba
The weather system is expected to spread across much of the northern region later in the day.
In the North-Central, light morning rainfall is forecast for parts of Nasarawa and Benue, while moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are expected across the region later.
For the South, light rainfall is expected across parts of the South-South in the morning, followed by moderate rainfall later in Ondo, Oyo, Enugu, Imo, and other areas of the South-East and South-South.
NiMet’s Safety Advisory
NiMet warned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms and urged residents to take precautionary measures.
The agency advised the public to:
- Secure loose outdoor objects that could be blown away by strong winds.
- Avoid driving during heavy rainfall where possible.
- Disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms.
- Stay away from tall trees to reduce the risk of injury from falling branches or uprooted trees.
