The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) says it has formally notified 72 countries of a leadership transition within its apex administrative body, the Directorate of State (DOS).
According to the group, the notification announced the dissolution of the 3rd Administration of the Directorate of State, led by Mazi Chika Edoziem, and the inauguration of a 4th Administration headed by Mazi Chris Nwaogu, who is based in the United States.
According to information cited by the group, copies of the notification letters were sent to 72 countries and acknowledged by the embassies of several nations in Abuja.

The letters were dated June 24, 2026.
Letters reportedly issued from Sokoto Correctional Centre
IPOB said the notification letters were issued from the Sokoto Correctional Centre, where Nnamdi Kanu is serving a life sentence following his conviction on terrorism charges brought by the Nigerian government.
According to the group, each letter was issued on IPOB World Headquarters letterhead and signed by Kanu in his capacity as the group’s Supreme Leader.
The letters stated that the leadership transition was carried out in line with the provisions of the IPOB Code of Conduct, which the group described as its supreme governing instrument.
IPOB explains basis for leadership change
According to the notification, the authority to appoint, suspend, remove or replace principal officers and administrations rests exclusively with the Office of the Supreme Leader under the group’s Code of Conduct.
The letters also stated that the 3rd Directorate of State administration, led by Chika Edoziem, was appointed from Kuje Prison in 2017 while Kanu was awaiting trial.
IPOB said the newly inaugurated 4th Administration was constituted from Sokoto Correctional Centre, where Kanu is currently incarcerated.
Group says transition has been formally communicated
Sources within IPOB said the acknowledgements demonstrate that the group’s internal leadership transition has been formally communicated to multiple governments, including permanent and elected members of the United Nations Security Council.
The sources described the transition as lawful, transparent and consistent with the group’s internal constitutional framework.
