Tension gripped the Ojoo area of Ibadan in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State on Wednesday following a violent clash between members of the Yoruba and Hausa communities after the killing of a tricycle mechanic.
The unrest reportedly followed an overnight altercation in which the mechanic was allegedly stabbed to death by a Hausa scrap collector.
How the Incident Unfolded
According to eyewitness accounts, the violence began after an argument involving the victim and a scrap collector.
Witnesses alleged that the suspect, described as a Hausa scrap collector, pulled a firearm from a sack containing collected scrap before chasing a group of people. During the incident, the tricycle mechanic was allegedly stabbed and later died from his injuries.
The claims by eyewitnesses have not been independently verified.
Clashes Break Out, Residents Flee
The killing reportedly triggered outrage among some youths, leading to clashes and heightened tension in the community.
Witnesses said several residents fled their homes over fears of possible reprisals, although those claims could not be independently confirmed at the time of reporting.
Some residents also alleged that many northerners living in the area had gone into hiding as angry youths demanded that those responsible for the killing be identified and arrested.
