The Lagos State Task Force says it has impounded 278 commercial motorcycles during a weeklong enforcement operation aimed at curbing violations of the state’s restrictions on commercial bike operations.
According to authorities, the exercise focused on operators using prohibited highways and restricted corridors in contravention of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.
The latest action follows an earlier enforcement campaign and forms part of broader government efforts to strengthen public safety and maintain transport order across Lagos.
Areas covered during the operation included Ikorodu, Festac First Gate, Mazamaza, Iyana-Iba, Egbeda, Iyana Ipaja, Ikotun, Ojodu, Igando, LASU-Iba Road, Pipeline Road in Idimu and several other major transport corridors.
The Task Force stated that multiple riders were apprehended for operating along routes where commercial motorcycles are restricted under existing regulations.
Authorities also alleged that some operators were found transporting hazardous materials, including petroleum products and gas cylinders, while others reportedly carried school children and toddlers in conditions considered unsafe for busy roads.
Officials said the impounded motorcycles would be subjected to legal procedures that could result in forfeiture to the Lagos State Government through the courts, in line with provisions of the transport law.
Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, Chief Superintendent of Police Adetayo Akerele, said enforcement activities would continue until operators comply with the regulations.
“We will not be cowed or fold our arms and allow people of criminal intent to overrun Lagos or surrender to their illegalities,” he said.
Commercial motorcycle restrictions remain one of Lagos State’s key transport and security policies, with authorities arguing that enforcement is intended to improve road safety and reduce traffic-related risks.
