The last conversation between Ngozi Ishiwu-Obodo and her husband was about their son’s graduation photographs—a routine family discussion that ended just minutes before tragedy struck.
Now, the widow of late police inspector Dr. Ikechukwu Obodo is recounting the heartbreaking chain of events that led to his death, describing a night that forever changed her family’s life.
A Weekend With Family Ends in Tragedy
Speaking in an interview with The PUNCH, Ngozi, an indigene of Opi in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, said her husband, who hailed from Ologo in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, had spent the weekend at home with the family.
According to her, it was his usual routine to return to his duty post every Sunday after spending time with his loved ones.
She recalled that on Sunday, July 5, he left their home at about 7 p.m., assuring her they would remain in contact throughout his journey.
A Father’s Last Act
Before setting off, the late police inspector reminded his wife to purchase items their son needed for his graduation photographs scheduled for the following day.
Ngozi said he promised to reimburse her and, while still travelling, requested her bank account details. She said he fulfilled that promise by transferring the money at about 7:55 p.m.—a gesture that would become one of his final acts before the fatal incident.
The Phone Call That Changed Everything
Just over an hour later, at around 9 p.m., Ngozi’s phone rang again.
Expecting to hear her husband’s voice confirming he had safely arrived at his destination, she answered immediately.
Instead, a stranger was on the line.
“The person told me that the owner of the phone had an accident. I shouted and started begging them to help me and take him to a nearby hospital. The man and the people around him said I should start coming there, and that I should not come alone. I became afraid,” she told The PUNCH.
A Race Against Time
Ngozi said she immediately asked where the accident had occurred and was informed it happened along Bisala Road.
She quickly contacted one of her brothers, who works at Park Lane Hospital in Uwani, because the location was close to his workplace.
According to her, she informed him that her husband had reportedly been involved in an accident, and he assured her he would head straight to the scene.
Overcome with panic, Ngozi also rushed out of the house.
However, a neighbour noticed her distress, stopped to help, and drove her to the accident scene.
It was there that her worst fears were confirmed—her husband had died.
