The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has finalised the party’s list of candidates for the 2027 National Assembly elections, with the preferred aspirants of Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia and Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa reportedly excluded from the final nominations.
Party sources said none of the aspirants backed by the two governors made the final list after the NWC concluded its review of petitions arising from the party’s primary elections. The outcome is said to have triggered fresh political consultations as both governors explore alternative strategies for their loyalists.
In Ondo State, Governor Aiyedatiwa reportedly made last-minute efforts to overturn the decisions of the party’s appeal committee but was unsuccessful. The committee upheld candidates different from those he supported, prompting the governor to return to Akure after the appeals process concluded.
The NWC had earlier reviewed complaints from aggrieved aspirants and subsequently reshuffled several National Assembly tickets in the state, replacing some candidates who initially emerged from the APC primaries.
The final list has also sparked renewed protests in Ondo’s Ilaje Local Government Area, where supporters expressed dissatisfaction over the party’s decision to retain serving House of Representatives member Donald Ojogo after his appeal was upheld.
Speaking after the submission of the party’s candidates, APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, announced that all 471 nominees had been successfully uploaded to INEC’s portal. He said the party would now focus on mobilisation and preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Meanwhile, former APC governorship candidate in Edo State, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, accepted the outcome of the party’s Edo South Senatorial primary and urged members to remain united despite the contest’s outcome.
In a statement, Ize-Iyamu described the primary as part of the party’s democratic process and encouraged his supporters to rally behind the APC’s candidates ahead of the general election. He also thanked party members, volunteers and grassroots supporters for their commitment throughout his campaign, stressing that the party’s collective interest should take precedence over individual ambitions.
