Cross River Border Tension as 200 Cameroonian Troops Enter Danare Community
Tension erupted in Danare, a border community in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State, after more than 200 armed Cameroonian security personnel reportedly crossed into Nigerian territory on Wednesday without formal border clearance. The incident triggered panic among residents, many of whom fled their homes amid fears of a possible security escalation.
The development has raised renewed concerns about border security along the Nigeria–Cameroon frontier, an area that has previously witnessed cross-border tensions linked to conflict in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions.
Sudden Military Presence Sparks Panic
According to local sources, the heavily armed Cameroonian personnel entered Danare in the early hours of the day. Their unexpected presence immediately unsettled the community, with residents describing widespread fear and confusion as the situation unfolded.
The scale of the deployment reportedly involving over 200 armed officers — heightened anxiety, particularly given the history of militant activity and refugee movement across the border region.
Local Leader Intervenes to Prevent Escalation
A former Vice Chairman of Boki Local Government Area, Hon. Kingsley Mbia, reportedly stepped in during the incident. Community accounts indicate that he engaged the foreign personnel and urged caution to prevent any violation of Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
His intervention is believed to have helped de-escalate tensions and avert a direct confrontation between residents and the visiting security operatives.
Border Communities on Edge Amid Regional Conflict
Danare and other surrounding settlements have long served as refuge areas for people fleeing violence from Cameroon’s separatist conflict. The region has also experienced previous security concerns, including alleged cross-border pursuits by Cameroonian forces in past years.
Residents say the latest incident has revived memories of similar incursions recorded in 2017 and 2018, which previously prompted diplomatic concerns and drew attention from Nigerian authorities.
Calls for Government Action and Border Security
Community leaders are now urging the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen surveillance and monitoring along the border. They warned that repeated unauthorized military movements could heighten insecurity in already vulnerable communities.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Nigerian Army, the Federal Government, nor the Cross River State Government had issued an official statement on the reported incursion.
