A 28-year-old former U.S. Army soldier, Kendall Rashad Ramsey, has been convicted of first-degree murder after fatally stabbing his girlfriend and their six-month-old son inside their apartment in Hawaii in 2020.

According to prosecutors, Ramsey stabbed his girlfriend 38 times and his infant son 17 times before fleeing the scene. He was later involved in a car crash, which his defence claimed was an attempt to take his own life.

While receiving treatment at a hospital, Ramsey reportedly told medical workers that he had become intoxicated, got angry and blacked out. He claimed that when he regained awareness, he found his girlfriend and son dead.

Describing the crime scene during the trial, Deputy Prosecutor Scott Bell said even experienced police officers were unprepared for what they encountered.

“Even with years of experience of police work under their belts, the responding officers were unprepared for the horror that awaited them in that second-floor studio,” Bell said.

According to prosecutors, officers found blood covering the walls, furniture and carpet of the apartment. The infant was discovered lying near a trash can, while his mother was found nearby in a pool of blood.

Investigators also found several messages allegedly written in blood on the apartment walls, including:

“I’m sorry. I stabbed her. She choked me.”

During the trial, Ramsey’s defence argued that he had long struggled with mental health issues stemming from childhood abuse, abandonment, trauma and other personal challenges.
