A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, has criticised activist Omoyele Sowore following the activist’s remand in prison, arguing that sustained attacks on President Bola Tinubu should not be treated as a political strategy.
Igbokwe made the remarks in a post shared on his official Facebook page after a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered Sowore’s remand in Kuje Prison in connection with an ongoing case linked to comments he allegedly made on social media.
According to reports, Sowore is facing prosecution over allegations tied to a statement in which he allegedly referred to President Tinubu as a criminal. The activist’s legal matter remains before the court.
Reacting to the development, Igbokwe expressed support for the court’s decision and accused Sowore of repeatedly disregarding lawful processes through years of activism and public demonstrations.
“Nigeria is not a lawless country,” Igbokwe wrote, adding that protests, confrontations with security agencies and persistent criticism of the president do not amount to a sustainable public career.
The APC chieftain also alleged that Sowore had repeatedly crossed legal boundaries in his political engagements and activism. Those remarks represent Igbokwe’s personal position and have not been established by the court.
The case has drawn renewed public attention to the boundaries between political expression, activism and legal accountability in Nigeria. Proceedings in court are expected to continue as both sides present their positions.
