A closed-door session of the Nigerian Senate reportedly descended into a heated confrontation on Tuesday as Senator Kawu Sumaila clashed with Senate leaders over federal borrowing, abandoned infrastructure projects, and concerns about the political consequences ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to sources familiar with the proceedings, tensions rose after Sumaila questioned the implementation of projects across the country, arguing that many contractors had abandoned project sites due to non-payment despite the approval of substantial loan requests by the National Assembly.
The Kano South senator reportedly expressed concern that ongoing delays in project funding could negatively affect public perception of lawmakers and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the next general election.
He was quoted as saying that contractors had not received payments despite the Senate’s approval of major loan facilities requested by President Bola Tinubu.

Sources said Sumaila warned that worsening economic conditions and stalled projects could make it difficult for many elected officials to defend their records before voters in 2027.
His remarks reportedly triggered a strong reaction from Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.

However, Sumaila reportedly rejected the claims and insisted that his criticism was motivated by concerns shared by many lawmakers regarding project implementation and economic realities.
According to sources, the senator accused the Senate leadership of attempting to intimidate him because of his comments.
