A legal battle between Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and former Senate President Bukola Saraki took a new turn on Wednesday as the matter came before the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin over allegations of cyberbullying and defamation.
The case stems from a social media post made by Saraki on April 17, 2026, in response to an earlier statement issued by the Kwara State Government. Governor Abdulrazaq alleges that the post damaged his reputation and amounted to both defamation and cyberbullying.
During proceedings before Justice M. O. Folorunso, a team of lawyers representing Saraki appeared in court to contest the claims brought against the former Senate President and two-time governor of Kwara State.
Counsel to the governor argued that Saraki’s comments, particularly references to Abdulrazaq’s educational qualifications, were capable of causing public unrest and undermining peace in the state. The legal team consequently requested a bench warrant and an order compelling Saraki’s personal appearance before the court.
Saraki’s lawyers, however, challenged the validity of the case, arguing that the court process was improperly initiated and that the High Court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter. They further maintained that the social media posts in question, published on Facebook and X, constituted an exercise of free speech and a response to issues raised by the state government.
After hearing arguments from both parties, the court adjourned proceedings until July 3, 2026, when it is expected to rule on the applications filed by the opposing legal teams.
Meanwhile, Saraki urged his supporters to remain peaceful and respect the rule of law while the case is being determined. In a statement issued by Abdulganiyu Abdulqadir, the former Senate President described the legal action as an attempt to intimidate him but insisted he would continue to comment on matters of public interest.
The dispute adds another chapter to the long-standing political rivalry in Kwara State, where both leaders remain influential figures in the state’s political landscape. The court’s forthcoming ruling could determine whether the case proceeds to a full hearing.
