Amnesty International has condemned a deadly attack on the Irigwe community in Angwan Magaji, Kamaru Ward of Kauru Local Government Area in Kaduna State, following reports that nine people were killed and 11 others injured during a late-night assault.
According to the human rights organisation, the attack occurred on June 16, 2026, when armed assailants reportedly entered the community and carried out the assault under cover of darkness.
Amnesty International said the victims included two children aged five and four. The organisation further alleged that several residents were killed during the incident, while three women were reportedly attacked inside their homes.
Search operations were still ongoing for residents reported missing in the aftermath of the violence, according to the group.
Reacting to the incident, Amnesty International described the attack as one of the most severe recent episodes of violence recorded in Southern Kaduna and raised concerns about recurring insecurity affecting rural communities in the area.
“This is perhaps one of the deadliest recent attacks in the southern part of Kaduna State, with yet another rural community shattered by an attack in the later hours of the night,” the organisation said.
The rights group urged authorities to strengthen security measures, protect vulnerable communities and ensure accountability for those responsible.
Amnesty International also expressed concern over what it described as a continued pattern of killings, abductions and violent attacks across Southern Kaduna, warning that persistent impunity remains a threat to residents’ safety and right to life.
