19 Reportedly Killed in Fresh Overnight Attack in Plateau Community

At least 19 people were reportedly killed and several others injured after armed attackers stormed Kawel village in Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau State, in a late-night assault that has renewed concerns over persistent insecurity in the region.

Residents said the attack occurred on Sunday night while community members were asleep, with reports of gunfire spreading panic across the area.

A local source, Luka, said information about the incident reached youth leaders shortly after midnight and triggered immediate efforts to alert security agencies.

“A youth leader called around 12 a.m. and reported that gunmen attacked the community and shot several persons. So far, 19 deaths have been confirmed,” he said.

According to him, security personnel stationed in Bokkos were contacted immediately after the reports emerged and indicated they had already received intelligence about the incident and were moving into the affected community.

Residents described the assault as unprovoked and called for stronger security presence to protect vulnerable settlements that have repeatedly faced attacks.

The latest violence comes less than a week after the reported killing of the District Head of Gwande, Saf Samuel Alaket, who was said to have been attacked along the Sha District corridor near Daffo community while returning from a traditional council meeting.

The back-to-back incidents have heightened fears among residents and renewed calls for improved intelligence gathering, faster emergency response and sustained protection for communities across Plateau State.

As of the time of reporting, officials of the Plateau State Police Command and Operation Safe Haven had not publicly confirmed casualty figures or released an official account of the incident.

Authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations and security assessments continue.
