A retired senior military officer, Major General Sani Kukasheka Usman (retd.), has praised Nigerian troops for thwarting an attempted terrorist attack on the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC) in Monguno, Borno State, saying their swift intervention prevented what could have been a mass abduction of students.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Usman said the security forces acted before the attackers could execute their plan, describing the operation as a major success in the fight against insurgency.
Troops Acted Before Attack Could Succeed
According to the retired general, the military’s proactive response enabled troops to confront the terrorists, rescue those at risk, and prevent the planned attack from escalating.
“They proactively preempted the terrorists and not only rescued the people, they were able to deal decisively with them. But unfortunately many of them have escaped with gunshot wounds, and of course there were reported collateral damages created by the gunfire of the Boko Haram terrorists. But I can assure you this is something that is heartwarming and we crave for more of it,” Usman said.
Attackers Reportedly Fled With Gunshot Wounds
Usman disclosed that several of the suspected Boko Haram fighters escaped during the operation after sustaining gunshot wounds.
He also acknowledged reports of collateral damage caused by gunfire from the insurgents during the confrontation.
Despite the challenges, he said the outcome demonstrated the growing effectiveness of proactive military operations against terrorist groups operating in the North-East.
Call for Sustained Counterterrorism Efforts
The retired general described the operation as an encouraging development and urged security agencies to sustain similar intelligence-led and proactive responses to insurgent threats.
He said preventing attacks before they occur remains critical to protecting vulnerable communities and institutions, particularly schools that have previously been targeted by terrorist groups.
The reported foiling of the attempted attack underscores the continued security challenges facing parts of Borno State while highlighting the importance of rapid military intervention in preventing large-scale attacks on civilian targets.
