Former Premier League player and manager Glenn Hoddle has said Liam Rosenior is likely to remain in charge of Chelsea, but warned that his position will depend on improved results.
Chelsea’s struggles continued on Saturday night as they suffered a fourth straight Premier League defeat, losing 1-0 to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
The result leaves Chelsea in sixth place, with the gap to fifth-placed Liverpool potentially stretching to seven points if they beat Everton in the Merseyside derby.
Rosenior, who replaced Enzo Maresca in January, has already come under pressure from sections of the club’s supporters following a poor run of form.
Despite this, Hoddle believes the club will continue to back the 41-year-old through the remainder of the season and into the next campaign. Speaking on Premier League Productions, he suggested the club sees Rosenior as part of a long-term project.
“They’re in a difficult situation,” Hoddle said, adding that the manager is likely to be given time to finish the season. However, he stressed that results must improve, noting that securing wins before the campaign ends is crucial.
He also pointed out that even if Chelsea fail to qualify for the Champions League, they still have a chance to win silverware as they remain in the FA Cup semi-finals.
Hoddle further stated that Rosenior is expected to be given the opportunity to lead the team through pre-season and start the next term. However, he cautioned that a poor start to the new season could put the manager’s future at serious risk.
