The internal crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has escalated, with several state chapters halting their planned congresses ahead of the party’s national convention.
The congresses, initially scheduled for April 11, 2026, have been disrupted in multiple states, with some suspending the exercise while others remain uncertain about proceeding.
In Adamawa State, the situation took a legal turn after a High Court in Yola restrained the party from conducting its congresses. Presiding judge, Ahmed Isa, ordered a suspension of the exercise pending the outcome of the case and adjourned proceedings to April 15, 2026.
Reacting to the development, the party’s North East Vice Chairman, Babachir Lawal, said he was unaware of the court order, stating that he was not present during the proceedings.
In Anambra State, the ADC leadership also announced the suspension of its congresses. The state chairman, Patrick Obianyo, said the decision was taken in line with respect for due process and judicial authority.
He urged party members to remain calm and law-abiding, while cautioning the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against recognising any actions by individuals claiming to be party leaders without authorisation.
Similarly, the party’s chapter in Ondo State suspended its congresses following directives linked to the re-recognition of the party’s national leadership. The state chairman, Wole Ademoyegun, said the decision aligns with instructions from INEC to maintain the status quo.
In Zamfara State, uncertainty surrounds the exercise, with the state chairman, Kabiru Garba, stating that no preparations had been made and that he had not been briefed on the planned congresses.
The same development was recorded in Niger State, where the state chairman, Musa Hassan, confirmed the suspension of congresses across all 25 local government areas, citing the need to uphold due process and legal compliance.
The widespread disruptions highlight deepening divisions within the ADC, raising concerns about the party’s readiness for its upcoming convention and overall internal cohesion.
